Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Sweden?
In EU and EEA countries you pay the same as at home for calls, texts and data ('Roam Like At Home'). Since 1 January 2026 this also covers Ukraine and Moldova, and some outermost regions such as the Canary Islands are included.
With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Sweden is below.
📜 The rules in Sweden
The details
- Operators may apply a fair use policy that limits your data in the EU, even with unlimited data at home. At the limit you get a message with the prices, a free number for more information and a note that 112 is free. (pts.se)
- Home prices apply only while you are temporarily in another country, for example on holiday, not if you move abroad. (pts.se)
- Operators do not have to offer roaming, and some contracts do not include it, so check your contract before you travel. (pts.se)
- On ships and planes the EU rules apply only on land-based mobile networks; via satellite, roaming can cost extra with no price cap. Switch off roaming or use flight mode on board. (europa.eu)
Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS)
If you think your operator broke the roaming rules, complain to the operator first; if you are not satisfied with the answer, contact the national regulator, PTS.
🪜 Step by step
- Check your plan before you travelSee which countries your plan treats like home and whether it has a separate data allowance abroad.
- Read the welcome messageWhen you arrive, your operator usually sends a message with the prices and limits that apply.
- Watch the fair-use limitUnlimited or very large data plans can have a smaller allowance abroad. Above it, a surcharge can apply.
- Take care on ships, planes and near bordersThere your phone can connect to a network outside the usual roaming rules. Switch off roaming or use flight mode when in doubt.
