Can I install a charging point for my electric car at home in Denmark?
A home charging point needs a safe installation and often a notification to the grid operator. Tenants and flat owners may need permission, and some countries give a right to install.
📜 The rules in Denmark
Charging an electric car at home
Since 1 January 2026, tenants, flat owners and co-op members with their own parking space on the property have a right to install a charging point there. Give the landlord or association 3 months' notice; you pay the costs and must use an authorised electrician.
- The landlord or association may ask for security for restoring the space and may refuse for architectural or technical reasons, older registered easements, listed buildings, or (for tenants) if there is already one charging point per ten parking spaces. (retsinformation.dk)
- When you move out, you must restore the space unless you agree otherwise. (retsinformation.dk)
🪜 Step by step
- Check your connectionAsk an electrician whether your connection and meter can handle the charger.
- Ask permission where neededTenants ask the landlord and flat owners the owners' association. See below what the rules in Denmark say.
- Notify the grid operatorMany grid operators want to know about a charging point before or after it is installed. See the rules below.
- Use a qualified installerHave the charging point installed and tested by a qualified electrician.

❓ Questions
Can my landlord refuse?
That depends on the rules in Denmark. Where there is a right to install, a refusal usually needs a good reason.
Do I need a bigger connection?
Not always. The electrician and the grid operator can tell you.
Can I charge cheaper at night?
With a time-of-use or dynamic price, charging at off-peak hours can cost less. Ask your supplier.
