Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Denmark?
You can take your number to another provider within fixed lines or within mobile. It must move by the end of the next working day after your old provider gets the request, with no separate charge (teleloven §§ 26–28).
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Denmark
Compensation
You are entitled to reasonable compensation for a delayed or abused porting. The law sets no amount: each provider sets it in its subscription terms, and you can complain to Teleankenævnet if it is missing or too low.
The details
- A binding or notice period does not stop porting, but you still pay the old provider until it ends. To avoid paying twice, you can agree a later porting date with your new provider. (digst.dk)
- Do not cancel your old subscription before the porting has started. If you have already cancelled, you keep the right to port the number for at least one month after cancelling. (digst.dk)
- You have no right to move a number between fixed line and mobile, and no right to porting when you only change subscription type with the same provider. (digst.dk)
- The one-day duty is unconditional: if your number is not moved within one day as agreed, you can contact Digitaliseringsstyrelsen, which asks both providers why. (digst.dk)
Digitaliseringsstyrelsen
Supervises that providers follow the porting rules. Contact it if your number is not moved within one day as agreed.
Teleankenævnet
Handles consumer complaints about missing or unreasonable compensation for a delayed or abused porting.
🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Denmark set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
