📈 My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Denmark?

The short answer

Your provider must give you at least one month's notice, on a durable medium, of any price rise or other change to your disadvantage. You can then cancel free of charge until one month after the notice, even during a binding period (§ 6).

When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Denmark.

📜 The rules in Denmark

Price rises built into the contract

The Danish rules contain no special rule for index-linked rises. The authority's guidance says every price rise is a change to your disadvantage that must be notified, with the right to cancel.

The details

  • The notice must be clear and state your right to cancel. Changes purely to your advantage, such as general price cuts, need no notice (slutbrugerbekendtgørelsen § 6). (retsinformation.dk)
  • The rule does not cover prepaid cards. Price rises for calls outside the EU caused by foreign partner networks need no notice, but the authority says providers should tell you when they can. (digst.dk)

❓ Questions

Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?

It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Denmark on this page.

How much warning must the provider give?

Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Denmark set a notice period, it is on this page.

What if I miss the deadline to leave?

The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
