🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Denmark?

The short answer

When you switch broadband provider, the new provider runs the switch and can cancel your old subscription for you with a power of attorney. Your internet may be down for at most one working day (bekendtgørelse nr. 523/2022, § 5).

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Denmark.

📜 The rules in Denmark

The details

  • Until the new provider activates your internet, the old provider must keep it running on the same terms. Your old internet subscription then ends automatically once the switch is complete (§ 6). (retsinformation.dk)
  • On request, the old provider forwards mail sent to your old provider email address to your new address, free of charge for six months, if you cannot reach that mail server otherwise (§ 6, stk. 3). (retsinformation.dk)
  • Providers must tell you about the switching procedure, any risk of paying twice for a period and your right to compensation. They owe reasonable compensation if a switch is delayed or abused (§§ 4 and 7). (retsinformation.dk)
  • To keep your number when you switch mobile provider, contact the new company: it moves the number and cancels your old subscription for you. Do not cancel the old subscription yourself first. (forbrug.dk)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Denmark on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Denmark. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
