📡 Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Denmark?

The short answer

Under the EU net-neutrality rules, which Digitaliseringsstyrelsen supervises, you have the right to use the equipment you want. If your provider restricts that right, complain to it first, then to Teleankenævnet if you have a money claim.

Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Denmark.

📜 The rules in Denmark

The details

  • A SIM lock or other tie of your phone to one mobile network may last at most six months. After that the lock must be removed free of charge as soon as possible when you ask (§ 7, stk. 2). (digst.dk)
  • Car Wi-Fi: after at most six months' binding you must be free to choose another internet provider in your car. Making you buy and install equipment yourself does not meet this rule. (digst.dk)
  • Your contract must state any restriction the provider puts on using equipment it supplies (slutbrugerbekendtgørelsen, bilag 1). (retsinformation.dk)
  • When you cancel broadband you may have to return equipment such as the modem. Get a receipt: you are as a rule responsible for it arriving, and a fee may apply if agreed beforehand. (forbrug.dk)

❓ Questions

Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?

Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.

Do I still pay for the provider’s router?

Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.

Will my own router make my internet faster?

It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
