Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Denmark?
If your subscription includes roaming, you pay your usual Danish prices for calls, texts and data in other EU countries and in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein (Roam-Like-at-Home). Your provider may set a fair-use limit for data abroad.
With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Denmark is below.
📜 The rules in Denmark
The details
- Providers are not obliged to offer roaming. National-only subscriptions are allowed, and you cannot add roaming as a paid extra: you need a subscription that includes it. Check before you travel. (digst.dk)
- If most of your use over four months is abroad and you mostly stay abroad, the provider may charge a surcharge. It must prove this and warn you first. (digst.dk)
- Your provider may not deliberately lower quality or speed when you roam. If you have 4G at home and 4G is available on the visited network, you should as a rule be able to use it. (digst.dk)
- On ships and planes Roam-Like-at-Home applies only on land-based mobile networks. Calls and data via satellite usually cost much more. (digst.dk)
Digitaliseringsstyrelsen
Supervises the EU roaming rules and decides on providers' applications to charge a roaming surcharge.
Teleankenævnet
Handles disputes about your bill, including roaming surcharges, after you have complained in writing to your provider without success.
🪜 Step by step
- Check your plan before you travelSee which countries your plan treats like home and whether it has a separate data allowance abroad.
- Read the welcome messageWhen you arrive, your operator usually sends a message with the prices and limits that apply.
- Watch the fair-use limitUnlimited or very large data plans can have a smaller allowance abroad. Above it, a surcharge can apply.
- Take care on ships, planes and near bordersThere your phone can connect to a network outside the usual roaming rules. Switch off roaming or use flight mode when in doubt.

Which countries count as home?
That depends on your plan and on where your operator is based. The rules for Denmark are on this page.
Are calls back home free?
Calls home usually cost the same as at home when roaming at home prices applies. Calls to other countries can cost extra.
