What must I get before I sign a phone or internet contract in Hungary, and can I change my mind?
Before you sign, the provider must give you free of charge the pre-contract information and a short contract summary on the official template. If it cannot do so beforehand for technical reasons, the contract takes effect only once you confirm it after receiving the summary.
Before you sign, you should get the key terms in writing: price, term, speed and how to leave. In many countries a short contract summary is required, and contracts made online, by phone or at your door usually come with a cooling-off period. The rules for Hungary are below.
📜 The rules in Hungary
The details
- For a contract made online, by phone or away from a shop, you can withdraw within 14 days of signing without giving a reason. If you were not told about this right, the period is extended by 12 months. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- The pre-contract information and the summary become part of your contract with the content you received, unless you and the provider expressly agreed otherwise when signing. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- Once a year you can ask for a free document showing the current content of your contract; the provider must hand it over within 8 days, during the contract or within one year after it ends. (nmhh.hu)
- If the provider misses the agreed start date, you can withdraw before the connection is installed without any disadvantage; it must refund what you paid within 30 days. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH)
The telecom authority. It acts on breaches of telecom rules once you have complained to the provider first; it can order the provider to comply or fine it, but does not decide your individual claim.
Békéltető testületek
Free, independent conciliation boards run by the county and Budapest chambers of commerce. They settle consumer disputes about your contract out of court once you have tried and failed to settle directly with the provider.
