📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Bulgaria, and how do I end it?

The short answer

Providers must offer an initial term of no more than two years, and also a contract of up to one year. A fixed-term contract is renewed only with your express written consent; otherwise it becomes indefinite on the same terms (arts 229–229а ЗЕС).

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Bulgaria.

📜 The rules in Bulgaria

The details

  • Once the contract is indefinite, you can end it at any time with one month's notice, without penalties or extra costs; you pay only for the service during the notice period. (damtn.government.bg)
  • Before the contract turns indefinite, the provider must tell you in good time, on a durable medium, that the term is ending and how to terminate, and recommend its best tariffs; it must send best-tariff information at least once a year. (damtn.government.bg)
  • Signing for extra services or a device from the same provider does not extend your original term unless you expressly agree to that when you sign. (damtn.government.bg)
  • If you leave early and keep a device that came with the contract, the compensation may not exceed the smaller of the device's pro-rata value agreed at signing or the remaining service fees until the end of the term. (damtn.government.bg)
  • Check how long promotional prices last: CRC notes they often apply for only 3 or 6 months, not the whole 12- or 24-month term. (crc.bg)
