📡 Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Bulgaria?

The short answer

Providers may not refuse to connect terminal equipment, such as your own router or modem, that meets the technical product requirements (art. 271 ЗЕС). The law also protects your right to use equipment of your choice under the EU Open Internet Regulation.

Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Bulgaria.

📜 The rules in Bulgaria

The details

  • CRC's position: providers should not tie internet access to their own devices that you cannot replace. They may install equipment only where it is technically part of their network, as with fibre to the home or cable; you can connect any compliant device to it. (crc.bg)
  • Providers must say on their website which devices you need for the service and whether you may supply them yourself. (crc.bg)
  • The pre-contract information must state the conditions and fees for using a device supplied by the provider. (damtn.government.bg)
  • When your contract ends, you can return digital TV equipment through a free and easy procedure, unless the provider proves it works fully with other providers' TV services. (damtn.government.bg)

❓ Questions

Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?

Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.

Do I still pay for the provider’s router?

Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.

Will my own router make my internet faster?

It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
