🌍 Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Slovenia?

The short answer

In other EU countries and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine, calls, texts and data are charged as at home and deducted from your plan (roam like at home). Your operator must enable this automatically; you don't need to do anything.

With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Slovenia is below.

📜 The rules in Slovenia

The details

  • With unlimited or very cheap mobile data, the operator may set a fair-use limit for roaming data. It must tell you in advance and alert you when you reach it; above it a small regulated surcharge may apply. (europa.eu)
  • Each time you enter another EU country, you get a free message with your roaming prices, any fair-use policy, and the information that calling 112 is free. (digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu)
  • Your operator may check your use over four months. If you spent more time and used your phone more abroad than at home, it can ask you to explain within 14 days and then charge capped surcharges. (europa.eu)
  • On ships and planes, satellite networks are not covered by EU roaming rules and can be very expensive. Switch off roaming or use airplane mode. (europa.eu)
  • If you think your operator broke the roaming rules, complain to it first; if unhappy with the answer, turn to the national telecoms regulator. (europa.eu)

❓ Questions

What does fair use mean?

Operators may limit roaming at home prices to normal travel, not living abroad for good, and may cap data abroad on very large plans.

Which countries count as home?

That depends on your plan and on where your operator is based. The rules for Slovenia are on this page.

Are calls back home free?

Calls home usually cost the same as at home when roaming at home prices applies. Calls to other countries can cost extra.
