📈 My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Latvia?

The short answer

Your provider must tell you individually about any contract change, including a price rise, at least one month before it takes effect. If the change is unfavourable to you, you can end the contract without a penalty within one month of the notice.

When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Latvia.

📜 The rules in Latvia

Price rises built into the contract

No separate Latvian rule or SPRK guidance on index-linked (inflation) price clauses was found. The law's general rule covers unfavourable price changes: at least one month's notice and the right to leave without a penalty.

The details

  • A notice on the provider's website does not count; it must reach you personally, for example with your monthly bill or by email. It must also tell you about your right to leave without a penalty. (sprk.gov.lv)
  • If you keep using the service and do not tell the provider within a month that you are ending the contract, you are treated as accepting the change and lose the penalty-free exit. (sprk.gov.lv)
  • SPRK says a notice that leaves you less than a full month to decide is not binding, so the change does not take effect. Ask the provider for the proper time and complain to SPRK if it refuses. (sprk.gov.lv)
  • There is no penalty-free exit if every change only benefits you, is purely administrative (such as a new company name or bank account) and does not affect you, or implements legal requirements. (likumi.lv)

❓ Questions

Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?

It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Latvia on this page.

How much warning must the provider give?

Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Latvia set a notice period, it is on this page.

What if I miss the deadline to leave?

The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
