📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Latvia, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A fixed-term contract may initially last at most 24 months. If it renews automatically, after the first term you can end it at any time with one month's notice and no penalty, paying only for services received.

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Latvia.

📜 The rules in Latvia

The details

  • At least one month before an automatic renewal, the provider must tell you on a durable medium how to end the contract and which of its tariffs suit you best. (likumi.lv)
  • If you leave a fixed-term contract early, the penalty is split proportionally over each full month left. Adding services or a device from the same provider does not extend your original term unless you agree otherwise. (likumi.lv)
  • A provider cannot turn an open-ended contract into a fixed-term one, or extend a fixed term, by a one-sided change. New commitments apply only if you clearly agree, and a discount is no reason for a new term. (sprk.gov.lv)
  • According to the consumer protection centre PTAC, providers must let you choose between a 12-month and a 24-month contract; the terms, such as the price, may differ. (ptac.gov.lv)
