Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Latvia?
You can keep your phone number when you change provider, free of charge. Apply to the new provider; it must move and activate the number as soon as possible and no later than one working day after the date agreed with you.
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Latvia
Compensation
The law sets no fixed amount: the new provider's porting contract with you must state the deadline and the compensation you get if it is missed (Electronic Communications Law, art. 43(1)).
The details
- You can ask to port the number while you use it, or within one month after your contract ends unless you gave up this right when ending it. You must not be without service for more than one working day. (likumi.lv)
- Mobile numbers move between mobile networks and landline numbers between fixed networks. Mobile numbers are activated Monday to Friday between 03:00 and 05:00, except public holidays; a landline port may interrupt service for at most two hours. (likumi.lv)
- Your current provider may not block or delay the move without a valid reason; claims of technical impossibility are unfounded. The new provider may refuse you, for example if you changed operator more than once a month. (sprk.gov.lv)
- On request, the old provider refunds prepayments for the period it no longer served you. Early-exit terms of a fixed-term contract with the old provider still apply. (likumi.lv)
Sabiedrisko pakalpojumu regulēšanas komisija (SPRK)
If your provider has not solved the problem, send SPRK a written complaint: signed with a secure e-signature to sprk@sprk.gov.lv, as a signed letter to Skanstes iela 25, Rīga, LV-1013, or through your official e-address.
🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Latvia set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
