🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Latvia?

The short answer

To switch internet provider, apply to the new provider; your contract with it sets the switch date and the compensation if that date is missed. The old provider must confirm or give reasons for refusing within two working days.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Latvia.

📜 The rules in Latvia

The details

  • Until the new service starts, the old provider must keep your internet on the same terms, and you may be without internet for at most one working day. On request, the old provider refunds prepayments for the period it no longer served you. (likumi.lv)
  • Switching does not cancel a fixed-term contract's early-exit terms: you still owe the old provider what those terms say, and any separate device rental or instalment contract continues to apply. (sprk.gov.lv)
  • An open-ended contract can be ended at any time without a penalty by giving the provider one month's notice. (likumi.lv)
  • To see which providers serve your address and their maximum speeds, use the official broadband map platjoslaskarte.lv, developed by the Ministry of Transport with SPRK. Mobile coverage shown there is theoretical and outdoors. (sprk.gov.lv)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Latvia on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Latvia. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
