Lost, damaged or delayed bags are paid under the Montreal Convention, not EU 261.

Liability for checked baggage is capped at 1,288 Special Drawing Rights per passenger — roughly €1,500. It covers loss, damage and delay, and is based on your actual proven loss up to that cap, not a fixed figure.

File a PIR at the airport immediately, then follow up in writing: typically within 7 days for damage and 21 days for delay. Keep receipts for replacement essentials.
