File a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) at the baggage desk before you leave the airport, and keep the reference. This is a Montreal Convention claim, not EU 261.
Follow up in writing within the deadlines — generally 7 days for damage, 21 days for delay — and keep receipts for essentials you had to buy. Liability is capped at roughly €1,500.
